On the 14th of May, 2020, the CEO of SpringRock Group, Eke U. Eke was interviewed by The Year Energy, on the steps SpringRock has taken as a company to protect its personnel and ensure business continuity during the pandemic, as well as the best timing for Nigeria to begin pursuing renewables.

The interview also covered the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on businesses, highlighting how Oil and Gas operators can cope with the reduction in oil price, production volumes, opportunities for industry stakeholders to focus on Research and Development, Africa’s energy transformation, and lots more.

Mr. Eke also gave his take on best practices that local
industry players should look at in cost reduction, he however also stated that,
“any rate adjustments being made now should be time limited. Once the oil price
gets back into a reasonable zone, rates should also go back up to wherever they
were prior to the crisis. It is important that these adjustments are brought
back up based on the behaviour of the oil price.” He further outlined
other areas of cost reduction which may have more significant impact.

This is following the demand-sapping corona virus pandemic and a global oil price drop due to the pandemic that rocked the industry in the first quarter of 2020.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SpringRock Group, Mr. Eke U Eke alongside some of his female colleagues, met with The Green Girl Company Chief Executive Officer, Dr May Ikeora and the current Miss Nigeria, Chidinma Aaron on Wednesday, 2nd October,2019 to discuss on partnership and support for The Green Girl Project, which is aimed at supporting girls to build on their aspiration to accomplish heights they themselves may not readily know possibly existed within them especially in subject-areas that oftentimes girls tend to be excluded like Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The project also includes provision of necessary guidance and mentorship to the young girls.

Mr Eke, talked on the stance SpringRock has taken on supporting women empowerment, as women make up half of the world’s population and they also provide a very valuable resource and talent pool with their unique behavioural skills, dedication, focus and talents. He also highlighted the policy of SpringRock, that females would fill up more than 50% of positions at SpringRock Group.

The Green Girl Company is having its Raising Girls Summit on Friday, 11th October 2019 and SpringRock is Sponsoring the Summit as a support of the efforts of Green Girls Project to empower young girls who are the future generation. During the summit one of our female Drilling Engineers, Mrs Obiageli Ogbuefi will speak at this event.

The discussion of the meeting was concluded on future collaboration on ways to empower both the young stars and the young ladies to pursue studies and knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

SpringRock Group launched SpringRock Gemini Resources and Talent Track Human Development Program. The event was held in Lagos, Nigeria at EKO Hotel and Suites on 19th May, 2017. The welcome address was delivered by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SpringRock Group, Mr. Eke U Eke. It was centered on SpringRock Group and its business entities, the launching of SpringRock Gemini Resources and its proprietary Human Development Program “Talent Track”. The full welcome address can be downloaded here.
In addition to the introduction of the six (6) business groups that make up the SpringRock Group, the launching also focused on “Talent Track” Human Development for engineers in the oil and gas industry. This was elaborated in the presentation by our Chief Technology and Operating Officer (CTOO), Mr. J. Muthukumar.

Talent track is designed to eliminate the challenge of developing fresh engineers to be adequately proficient for deployment in an Oil and Gas company. The “Talent track” model would solve the problem of building a new talent pool to supplement the existing limited pool of competent and skilled persons who can demonstrate capability, employability and adaptability to meet requirements of Oil and Gas companies.

The “Talent Track” Human Development program of SpringRock Gemini Resources in collaboration with iWells, Dubai is a unique training designed to enhance the competency of an engineer within 6-9 months through an international standard competency development model which would have required 2-3 years in a traditional training model. The CTOO’s presentation discussed the Seven Principles of Application Oriented Matrix Model which are used in the “Talent Track” Human Development program for enhancing an engineer’s talent and competency.

The program is aimed at developing the competency of engineers at three different levels, which are:

Level 1: Entry level, for fresh engineers and beginners with less than 1-2 years’ experience.

Level 2: Intermediate level, for experienced engineers or personnel with minimum 5 years of experience or has completed level 1 of the training.

Level 3: Advanced or Domain Expert Level, for people with more than 8 years of industry experience.

The event was a success with Executives and Senior Managers from over 25 companies, Bank Executives and Publications Leaders in the upstream sector in the Oil and Gas Industry present.

1. Oil Defines Our World
Oil defines our world – it can bring peace or war, poverty or prosperity.

Oil is a global commodity and has become a part of our daily life today. Other alternate sources like wind, solar, nuclear, thermal, hydro etc. provide energy in the form of electricity where as oil additionally provides “speed” in the form of fuel for automobiles, ships and planes and it is a raw material for more than 100,000 products that we use in our daily life. Today oil represents 34% of world energy demand and it is not easily replaceable in the foreseeable future unless a cost effective alternate source is developed.

At the current oil prices of around US$ 30/bbl, the economics of oil exporting countries and financial markets is suffering grievously. Although the oil importing countries are benefitting from the low prices as compared to the US$ 100/bbl level in the last 5 years, the benefits cannot be determined in the short term as the financial markets are badly affected across the world.

Oil Shocks

Starting with the Arab oil embargo to export oil to the US, the world has experienced the extreme effects of oil shocks and its influence in our daily life.

Arab Embargo – 1973

In October 1973, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) declared a ban of oil export to the US for supporting Israel in the Yom Kipper War with Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The oil prices soared by more than 400% from US$ 2.90/bbl to US$ 11.65/bbl by early 1974. This created one of the worst recessions and spiked inflation worldwide but more especially in the US. This embargo seriously damaged the trust in OPEC as a reliable exporter of oil and America’s entire energy security policy of the future including a ban to export indigenous crude were casted by that experience.

Iranian Revolution – 1979

The second major oil shock was experienced in 1979 when Shah of Iran was overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeini by Iranian Revolution. The revolution caused Iran’s oil output to decline by almost 4.5 million barrels of oil per day. Fear of continued disruption amidst a growing world economy pushed the oil prices up almost doubling the price by early 1980. Shah was considered to be pro-US and with Khomeini rising to the power, the US-Iran relationship became a thorn from that day until today. Khomeini denounced US calling it as “Great Satan” and “Enemy of Islam”. Within few months of Khomeini’s regime, in November 1979 Iranian students seized the American Embassy in Tehran detaining more than 50 Americans as hostages. The Iranians held them hostages for 444 days. America immediately imposed strong economic sanctions against Iran. A bold attempt by the US to rescue the hostages ended as a debacle. Iranians made a big show of the rescue failure in the world television. Following the death of Shah in the US and Iraq declaring war against Iran, Khomeini became more amenable for negotiations as he needed warfare to fight Iraq.

Although the hostages were freed by continued diplomatic efforts, the then Carter’s Administration was considered to be weak and ineffective.

Russia made gains in this troublesome period in the middle of the cold war and invaded Afghanistan in 1980 to support their puppet Marxist Government.

The disturbance in the Middle East in 1979-1980, apart from triggering another oil shock, created a significant impact on world politics in the middle of the cold war era whose effects are reverberating even today.

iWells Management Consultancy: iWells, Dubai, UAE is specialised in drilling oil and gas wells with focus on well optimisation, technical and operational integrity, effective drilling execution strategies, risk mitigation and prevention, integration of multi-disciplined approach to deliver complex projects through a defined well delivery process and establishing Integrated Project Management concepts in the industry.

J. Muthu Kumar, Managing Director, iWells: + 30 years of experience in well construction (drilling, testing and completion) in all drilling environment with +12 years in running integrated project management contracts. Founder of iWells and lead manager to deliver its objectives.

1. Operating Model in the US$ 35 bbl Market

The oil and gas industry enjoyed a successful run in a +US$ 60/bbl world for more than a decade except for a short period in 2008-2009 during the world wide economic melt down when the oil prices fell below US$ 40/bbl. The last 5 years had seen an unprecedented and exceptional run at +US$ 100/bbl world which provided high returns for oil exporters and investors. The high margin of returns allowed investors to expand the drilling activities and venture in to highly complex and extreme environments which created a high demand for rigs, services, equipment and manpower.

The average cost of an offshore well had risen by 100-150% from 2003 until 2014. Due to high crude oil price, the oil and gas companies were able to afford such increased well costs without much focus on cost optimisation or attempts to reduce the cost of rig and services which increased by more than 100% of the 2005-2007 costs. In addition, the costs of services were driven by oil and gas companies using specialised services and expensive technology to drill complex and minimum tolerance wells. Due to low focus on optimisation and efficiency, engineering and process driven issues, inadequate performance values and improperly managed learning curves added further costs to the well.

How does it relate to the current scenario of US$ 35/bbl? Unlike 2008-2009 where the low oil prices existed only for a short duration, the current fall in oil prices is expected to be a long term phenomenon. The latest OPEC Dec 2015 World Oil Outlook report predicts a US$ 5 /bbl increase per year to reach US$ 70/bbl (real terms) in 2020 and this outlook is based on predicted growth in economy and demand for oil. However, predictions and trends in the oil business had failed in the past as oil is not just about a demand-supply model like any other commodity and hence OPEC‟s prediction of a consistent US$ 5/bbl increase in the mid-term per year may not come true. Some predictions like that of Goldman Sachs indicate oil prices falling to US$ 20/bbl mark at least for a short duration in the near future.

Oil and Gas Companies are the hardest hit due to the fall in the oil prices to the current levels. With significant cut to their revenues, cash flow and ROI, many projects are dropped or investment decisions are delayed indefinitely. There is a fundamental shift from volume to value as many Operators are focusing on increasing production efficiency to existing wells rather than drilling new wells.

However, despite the lower ROI, several Operators need to drill new wells to sustain volume due to declining production levels, need of cash flow to manage debts/other financial commitments and comply with minimum work programme commitments to the Governments to avoid penalties. Some Operators continue to drill new development wells to take advantage of the market conditions to save significant well costs (holding the production until oil prices turn back). Few others, especially oil importing countries, take advantage of the low cost environment to drill exploratory wells for new commercial discoveries. Although rare, few oil and gas companies have to continue drilling due to committed minimum contract duration for the rig and services (to avoid significant penalty for early termination).

The service companies including the rig contractors, associated service providers, tangibles suppliers and manufacturers enjoyed a long comfortable high cost oil environment for almost 12 years (except in 2009).

Both the Operators and Service Providers understand that the oil prices and the market will eventually turn back and the need to be ready for ramping up resources quickly. The service providers strive to sustain the highly trained, skilled and quality personnel by staying in business despite costs falling in to new lows that they have not experienced for almost a decade.

Hence, it is difficult for the oil and gas companies and service providers to stay competitive in the current market conditions unless their entire strategy is shifted from a US$ 100/bbl thought process to a US$ 35/bbl model.

However, in today‟s world despite the low cost environment, they cannot compromise on technical and operational performance, must comply with safety, statutory, environment and regulatory standards and where applicable host communities/local content requirements (which requires serious consideration to business models in several countries).

The oil and gas companies and service providers must then work on a paradigm shift to their business and operating model to effectively manage the massive shifts in global market conditions (cannot be at local level), reduced funding and cash flow levels and potential lack of quality due to forced low cost operations. The paradigm shift must include positive engagement to achieve innovative contract models, development and adoption of efficient technology and excellence in execution. Jointly both the Operators and Service Providers must turn the market complexity and uncertainty into an opportunity for growth with the support of the Government Regulatory Bodies.
